Staying motivated isn’t magic. There isn’t a “motivation pill” you can take every day that activates your motivation. So what do you do when you’re feeling unmotivated?
There are days when we hit obstructions or holdups. Whether you’re going through a no-good day, feeling exhausted at work, or merely don’t know where to start, it’s essential to determine your “why.”
Your why is the purpose behind what you’re working toward. Distinctly identifying your why will help you keep driven during those challenging periods and continue to work toward your individual goals.
Today, spend some time to ponder your why–your purpose–for why you’re working toward something.
Once you establish your why, write it down on a piece of paper and tape it in an area you’ll spot it all the time, like your nightstand or bathroom mirror. When you’re feeling adrift or unmotivated, remember your why and let that motivate you to persist in reaching your goals.
What’s your goal? Lose weight? Increase fitness? Overhaul your eating habits?
Establishing goals is a fundamental component of the healthy habits we teach at Farrell’s Eagan. Try it for yourself during a free week with us.
How to Remain Motivated After Determining Goals
Now that you’ve settled on your why, here are some fantastic tips to help you keep working to reach your goals!
Make it Part of Your Schedule
This seems simple, but making new ways can be challenging. It takes three weeks to make a habit. Whatever your goal, make time to work on it once a day.
If you want to work out in the morning, schedule it on your calendar. If you want to meal plan every Sunday, write it in your agenda. With three weeks of following it, it will become a part of your regular routine.
Keep it Simple
Divide your goals into smaller, more achievable tasks. As an example, if you want to complete a marathon, you initiate training by running one mile a day–not 26!
Follow this same method every time to set a new goal. Break it down into simpler assignments that will lead you to the final goal.
Make it Enjoyable
There’s no reason you can’t enjoy the process! Having an enjoyable time is not your opponent–in fact, it can be a fantastic energizer. Make time to to be grateful for your work.
With all new challenges, you will learn and grow during the journey. And if your assignments are extremely difficult, pamper yourself once you’ve completed them!
Think About the Finish Line
Develop a mental image of yourself achieving your goals: What does it resemble? How do you feel in that moment?
Visualization is a strong tool that can help keep you on track and inspired while working toward your goal. It’s an especially valuable method when your work is challenging.
Take constant action daily–even if you’re not in the mood. Some days you may take massive action, while other days you might take not as much action. That’s OK! The important part is to stay consistent.
